How-to
Add a hosted PBS target to Proxmox VE.
Connect your cluster to a dedicated Proxmox Backup Server, add the datastore, run a backup, and verify the snapshot.
Steps
- Get PBS credentials. Collect the PBS hostname/IP, datastore name, username (token recommended), and password/token.
- Trust the PBS fingerprint. In Proxmox VE UI, go to Datacenter > Storage > Add > Proxmox Backup Server, enter the endpoint, user, and hit Fingerprint to approve.
- Add the datastore. Select your PBS datastore, name it, and enable Content: VZDump backup file. Save.
- Run a test backup. Create or use an existing backup job targeting the new PBS storage. Run once and confirm it completes.
- Verify the snapshot. In PBS, check Verify for the new snapshot, or trigger a manual verify to confirm integrity.
- Schedule regular backups. Set the backup job schedule and retention per your policy (daily/weekly/monthly) and align with prune/GC windows.
Prereqs
- PBS hostname/IP reachable from Proxmox VE
- PBS user or API token with datastore access
- Datastore name (case sensitive)
- TLS fingerprint ready to trust
- Backup window and retention plan
Quick checks
- Storage shows Active in Proxmox VE.
- Initial backup finishes without fingerprint or auth errors.
- Verify completes in PBS for the new snapshot.
- Retention/prune matches your schedule.
If something fails
- Re-approve the PBS fingerprint and retry.
- Confirm user/token permissions include the datastore.
- Check time sync (NTP) between PVE and PBS.
- Review firewall rules for 8007/backup traffic.
