How-to

Configure PBS Remote Sync for offsite copies.

Add a remote PBS target, sync backups offsite, and verify them so you have a clean recovery path.

Steps

  1. Collect remote PBS info. Remote hostname/IP, user/token, datastore name, and TLS fingerprint.
  2. Add remote as a sync target. In PBS UI: Datastores > Remote, add the remote PBS, approve the fingerprint, and test connection.
  3. Create a Sync Job. In PBS UI: Sync Jobs > Create. Choose local datastore, remote, and remote datastore. Pick namespaces if used.
  4. Schedule the sync. Set a cron schedule after local backups finish. Stagger to avoid overlap with verify/prune/GC.
  5. Run the first sync now. Trigger manually to populate the remote. Watch bandwidth and job logs.
  6. Verify remote snapshots. Configure verify on the remote datastore after sync completes.

Prereqs

  • Remote PBS reachable on TCP 8007/backup ports
  • User/token with sync permissions
  • TLS fingerprint for trust
  • Bandwidth window defined
  • Verify/prune schedules planned

Quick checks

  • Sync job completes without fingerprint or auth errors.
  • Remote datastore shows snapshots after first run.
  • Verify on the remote completes successfully.
  • Sync schedule does not overlap backup/verify windows.

If something fails

  • Re-fetch and approve the remote fingerprint.
  • Confirm user/token role includes sync permissions.
  • Check namespace selection matches what you expect to sync.
  • Inspect bandwidth/latency and adjust concurrency limits.
